Sod & Lawn Seeding

Professional sod installation service in Indianapolis Indiana

Sod Installation and Lawn Seeding in Indianapolis and South Indianapolis

Whether your yard needs a fresh start after a grading project or you’re dealing with bare patches and thin turf, Harris & Son’s Landscaping installs sod and seeds lawns across Indianapolis, Greenwood, Center Grove, and surrounding areas. We prep the ground right so what goes down actually grows.

Both services perform best when the ground has been properly graded first. If your yard has drainage problems, low spots, or rough grade left from construction, we handle the grading before anything goes down.

What We Do

Sod installation gives you an instant lawn. We grade and prep the soil, lay the sod in staggered joints so seams don’t wash out, and make sure edges are tight against walks and beds. Most residential sod jobs are complete in one day.

Lawn seeding is the right call when you want a specific grass variety, you’re covering a larger area on a budget, or you’re overseeding thin turf to thicken it up. We use a slice seeder to get seed-to-soil contact, which is what separates a seeding job that takes from one that doesn’t.

Both services work best when the ground has been properly graded first. If your yard has drainage issues, low spots, or rough grade from construction, we can handle the grading before we put anything down.

What to Expect After Installation

Sod needs consistent moisture for the first two to three weeks while roots establish. Keep foot traffic off it and water daily if there’s no rain. Most sod is ready for light mowing in three to four weeks.

Seeded lawns take longer. Germination in central Indiana typically runs 10 to 21 days depending on grass type and soil temperature. Fall seeding between late August and mid-October is the best window for cool-season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass and Tall Fescue.

What's the Difference?

Seeding a Lawn Advantages:
  • More grass varieties
  • Less expensive than sodding
  • Deeper root system
  • There is no thatch layer present which may harbor unwanted diseases or insects.
  • Initial establishment takes longer.
  • Time of seeding is limited mainly to late summer and early fall
  • Moisture is critical for the young seedlings.
  • Invasion of weeds into bare soil
  • The area is inaccessible until the seed is fully established.
  • Instant gratification
  • relatively weed-free in the beginning
  • Can be laid any time during the growing season.
  • Sodded lawns control soil erosion on slopes and eliminate problems with mud while the grass is becoming established.
  • Instant accessibility to the area
  • Expensive
  • Less selection or control over types of grasses (shade or drought tolerance)
  • Labor intensive
